If you are preparing for an interview at Google, Meta or Amazon, you will run into “Grokking” sooner or later. The course series from Educative has been a standard for coding patterns and system design for years. It has since grown into a full platform with AI mock interviews, projects and Cloud Labs. This review covers what actually matters for FAANG prep, which plan you need, and where the limits are.

Educative at a glance
Educative is an English-language learning platform for developers. Unlike Udemy or Coursera, it does not rely on video. It uses text, diagrams and code you run directly in the browser. Four parts matter most for interview prep:
| Component | What you get (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Grokking the Coding Interview Patterns | 85 hours, 28 patterns, 500+ challenges in 6 languages |
| Grokking Modern System Design Interview | 26 hours, 20+ case studies including AI systems |
| AI mock interviews | Coding, system design, behavioral, company-specific for Google, Meta, Apple and more |
| Code Feedback | Test results plus time and space complexity of your solution |
The text format is a matter of taste. If you are used to video, expect a few lessons to adjust. The upside: you move faster, can skip around easily, and write the code yourself instead of watching someone else do it. Educative also explains algorithms with step-by-step visualizations that you click through at your own pace.
Grokking the Coding Interview Patterns
The coding course is the main reason many candidates subscribe. Instead of grinding 500 LeetCode problems one by one, you learn 28 recurring patterns such as sliding window, two pointers, top-K elements and dynamic programming. Each pattern comes with an explanation, worked examples and exercises in C#, C++, Go, Java, JavaScript or Python.
This matches how FAANG companies score coding rounds: what counts is not one correct answer, but whether you can classify a problem and justify an approach. Once the patterns stick, you recognize faster which approach fits an unfamiliar problem.
You solve every problem in an editor right in the browser. Next to Run and Submit there is a hint, pseudocode, the full solution and an AI chat for when you are stuck. That is convenient, but it also tempts you to look too early. Give yourself the suggested time first, for 3Sum that is 30 minutes.
At 85 hours, the course is substantial. Plan for six to ten weeks if you are working alongside. For a faster start, the ten to twelve most common patterns are enough.
Grokking Modern System Design Interview
The system design course (formerly “Grokking the System Design Interview”) has two parts. First you learn building blocks like load balancers, caches, message queues, rate limiters and key-value stores. Then you apply them in case studies: YouTube, Uber, WhatsApp, Google Docs, a payment system, and newer AI cases like a ChatGPT-style system or an AI code assistant.
Its strength is a repeatable process from requirements through estimates to detailed design, which is exactly the structure interviewers expect. Its weakness: trade-offs are explained, but not challenged as hard as in a senior interview. For L5 and above, pair the course with a book like “Designing Data-Intensive Applications”. Our System Design Interview Resources cover more options.
AI mock interviews: what they can and cannot do
From the Premium plan up, Educative includes AI mock interviews. The selection is broad: coding rounds by topic, system design (messaging, video streaming, ride-hailing and more), behavioral formats up to engineering manager, and company-specific interviews: coding for Google, Meta, Apple, Netflix, Microsoft, Oracle and LinkedIn, and system design for Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix and others.
After each interview you get a report: a rating from “excellent” to “unsatisfactory”, sample answers, and a skills comparison covering areas like trade-off analysis, communication and problem scoping. That is valuable because you learn to think out loud under time pressure and spot gaps early.
The limit is clear: an AI does not react like a person who digs in after a weak justification, reads the room, or finds your STAR story unconvincing. The AI interviews are good practice between real conversations, not a replacement for them. Our comparison of mock interview options shows how AI tools, peer platforms and coaching differ.
How much does Educative cost? Prices and the current discount
Educative offers three plans. The prices below are for the annual plan in euros and were live on the pricing page on October 13, 2026:
| Plan | Per year | Per month | List price | Key extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | €119 | about €10 | €277 | all courses incl. Grokking, Code Feedback |
| Premium | €159 | about €14 | €370 | + 3 AI mock interviews/month, projects, Code Debugger |
| Premium Plus | €199 | about €17 | €463 | + 7 AI mock interviews/month, Cloud Labs, Expert Interview Coach |
Prices with 57 percent off, as of October 2026. Educative may change prices at any time.
A Halloween promotion is running right now, and Black Friday follows on November 27. To be honest: Educative offers its annual plans at 50 to 70 percent off for most of the year, only the name of the promotion changes. A countdown is no reason to buy today. The right moment is when you seriously start preparing.
Two points from the terms are worth knowing. First, Educative advertises locking in the discount “for life”, but its terms reserve the right to change prices with notice. Second, there is no fixed money-back guarantee; refunds are at Educative’s discretion. You need to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
Which plan for which goal?
- Coding rounds only: Standard is enough. All Grokking courses are included.
- Full FAANG prep: Premium. The three AI mock interviews per month are the biggest gain over Standard, because you practice coding, system design and behavioral rounds under realistic conditions.
- Cloud or DevOps roles: Premium Plus. Cloud Labs are only worth it if you want hands-on practice with AWS, Kubernetes and similar tools.
What Educative does not cover for jobs in Germany
Educative is entirely in English and focused on US big tech. For Google in Munich, Amazon in Berlin or Meta in Hamburg that is no problem, because their interview processes are similar worldwide. Our overview of FAANG in Germany shows which of these companies hire here.
For German corporates, Mittelstand companies or local startups you will find little that fits. The platform also does not cover the German-language HR interview, salary negotiation by German standards, or topics like probation periods and notice periods.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Pattern approach saves time over pure LeetCode grinding | Text format takes getting used to |
| Code runs in the browser with complexity analysis | System design trade-offs not deep enough for senior level |
| AI mock interviews with detailed reports | AI does not replace a real interviewer |
| Company-specific interviews for Google, Meta, Apple and more | Mock interviews capped at 3 or 7 per month |
| New AI case studies in the system design course | No fixed money-back guarantee |
| Annual plan from about 10 euros a month | Little content for German employers |
Verdict: who should use Educative?
Educative is worth it if you are preparing for an interview at an international tech company and want to learn in a structured way. The Grokking courses cover coding and system design more thoroughly than most alternatives, and the Premium plan’s AI mock interviews give you a first way to practice under pressure. At about 14 euros a month, that is a fair price.
How we would approach it: try the free lessons of both Grokking courses. If the format suits you, take the Premium annual plan and work through the patterns and case studies in parallel. Use the AI interviews once you have the basics down.

FAQ
How much does Educative cost?
On the annual plan, Standard costs 119 euros, Premium 159 euros and Premium Plus 199 euros (as of October 2026, with 57 percent off the list price). That works out to about 10, 14 and 17 euros per month. All Grokking courses are included in Standard. AI mock interviews start with Premium.
Which Educative plan is best for FAANG prep?
Premium, for most candidates. Standard already includes every course, including Grokking the Coding Interview Patterns and Grokking Modern System Design. Premium adds three AI mock interviews per month, so you can practice coding, system design and behavioral rounds under time pressure. Premium Plus is mainly worth it if you also need Cloud Labs for AWS or DevOps.
Does Educative offer a money-back guarantee?
No fixed guarantee is stated in the terms. Subscription refunds are at Educative's discretion and only considered shortly after purchase. You have to cancel at least 24 hours before the automatic renewal. Try the free lessons before committing to an annual plan.
Is the Educative discount really time-limited?
Individual promotions are, the discount itself barely. Educative rotates between promotions like Halloween, Black Friday and Cyber Monday and offers its annual plans at 50 to 70 percent off for most of the year. Buy when you are actually starting your prep, not because of the countdown.
Is Educative enough on its own to pass a FAANG interview?
It covers the technical knowledge well. What is missing is a person who challenges your explanations live and tells you how you come across. The AI mock interviews are a good intermediate step, but they do not replace a real conversation. At CodingCareer, former FAANG interviewers run mock interviews in English and German.
