FAANG Alternatives in Germany: Top Engineering Employers

FAANG alternatives in Germany: compare Snowflake, Databricks, Celonis, Zalando, SAP and GetYourGuide by engineering domain, language and interview steps.

The best FAANG alternatives in Germany are product companies with real engineering teams here: Snowflake and Databricks in Berlin for data platforms, Celonis in Munich and SAP in Walldorf for enterprise software, and Zalando and GetYourGuide in Berlin for consumer marketplaces. Choose by engineering domain, not by brand.

Key takeaways

  • A FAANG alternative is useful only if its core engineering domain overlaps with your experience.
  • Snowflake, Databricks, Zalando and GetYourGuide publish their interview steps; Celonis and SAP did not on the pages we reviewed.
  • Language rules live in the individual listing. One SAP Walldorf role we reviewed required fluent German.
  • None of these employers is an easy backup. Prepare for coding, system design or take-home work.
  • Compare offers by structure, not by rankings, using our FAANG salary guide.

Many developers start their search with five logos and stop there. That is a narrow list. FAANG companies hire in a limited number of German locations and teams, and a role that matches your background may not be open when you are ready to apply. A wider target list gives you more chances to land in a team where your experience is directly relevant.

This guide compares six employers we reviewed on 26 October 2026, explains how to judge whether a company is a genuine alternative for you, and maps typical developer profiles to employer types. If you first want to know which companies the acronym covers, read our FAANG companies list. For the FAANG offices themselves, start with our FAANG in Germany guide.

What makes a company a real FAANG alternative?🔗

A FAANG alternative is not simply a well-known tech brand. For an engineer, the useful question is whether the company offers what makes Big Tech roles attractive in the first place: ownership of a product, hard technical problems and colleagues you can learn from. Use these six criteria to judge any employer.

Product ownership. Does the team build and run its own product, or does it deliver projects for clients? Both are legitimate careers. They are different jobs, and they lead to different interview questions.

Engineering domain. Database internals, payments, search, frontend platforms and ML infrastructure each need different evidence. A company is only an alternative for you if its core domain overlaps with your experience or with the direction you want to grow.

Scale. Large traffic or data volumes create the distributed-systems problems that FAANG engineers talk about. Scale is not automatically better, but if that experience is your goal, check whether the team actually has it.

Working language. Some German offices work in English. Others expect German, particularly for roles close to German-speaking customers. The language rule usually lives in the individual listing.

Location. A company’s German presence may be concentrated in one city. If you cannot relocate, that narrows your list quickly.

Interview style. Some companies publish their process. Knowing whether you will face live coding, system design, a take-home task or a panel changes how you prepare.

Which FAANG alternative fits which engineering domain?🔗

Snowflake and Databricks: data platforms🔗

If you have worked on databases, query engines, streaming or large-scale data infrastructure, these two belong near the top of your list. Snowflake’s Berlin careers page describes the office as its first European engineering hub, opened in 2018 with about 15 people. The same page says Berlin now has more than 100 employees across engineering, product and sales.

Databricks lists Berlin among its R&D centers on its engineering careers page, alongside Amsterdam, Serbia and several US sites. Read each listing’s responsibilities before you apply. At data platform companies, some titles that contain “engineer” describe customer-facing technical work rather than core platform development, and the interview will reflect that difference.

These companies are a strong fit when your best stories involve performance, correctness and systems at scale. They are a weaker fit if your experience is mostly CRUD applications and you have not gone deep into how the data layer works.

Celonis and SAP: enterprise software🔗

Celonis lists Munich as its headquarters, and its engineering team page covers frontend, backend, full-stack, machine learning, platform, site reliability and quality disciplines. Check which of them currently have openings in Munich. Our Munich Big Tech guide covers Celonis alongside Google, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft, including the difference between its Engineering and Value Engineering departments.

SAP is headquartered in Walldorf, and its job board shows developer roles across very different stacks. A Senior Developer listing in Walldorf that we reviewed described cloud-native work with Java, Spring Boot, Kubernetes and SAP’s Business Technology Platform, and required fluent German and English. SAP’s job board has also advertised Walldorf developer roles focused on ABAP and S/4HANA development. Those are two distinct career paths inside one company, so filter by technology, not just by “SAP”.

Enterprise software suits developers who like complex business domains, long-lived products and integration problems. If you want to work close to consumers, it may feel distant.

Zalando: consumer marketplace at scale🔗

Zalando is a good fit for developers who want consumer-facing product engineering with real traffic. Its tech careers page lists backend, data, frontend, full stack, machine learning and mobile as engineering areas. On 26 October 2026, its Berlin software engineering search showed roles in payments, search, recommendations, transport planning and the ZEOS partner platform. One Software Engineer listing named both Dortmund and Berlin.

This spread makes Zalando useful for several profiles at once. A payments backend engineer and a frontend platform engineer can both find relevant teams, but they should prepare different project stories. Our overview of tech companies in Berlin for software engineers puts Zalando in context with other Berlin employers.

GetYourGuide: travel marketplace🔗

GetYourGuide was founded in Zurich, and its careers site records the step of establishing its Berlin headquarters. The same site notes that much of the tech team was historically based in Zurich. Current engineering listings cover both cities, for example a Senior Software Engineer role on the Agentic Platform team in Berlin. Other listed areas include the User Platform, AI Platform and Partner Tech.

GetYourGuide suits engineers who want product work on a two-sided marketplace, with platform and AI infrastructure teams alongside customer-facing features. Check the location of each role, because a team you like may sit in Zurich rather than Berlin.

How do their interview processes differ from FAANG?🔗

We only describe what the companies publish themselves. Treat candidate reports on forums as anecdotes, not as process documentation.

Zalando describes five steps for software engineers: a talent acquisition call, a hiring manager interview, a coding interview, a system design and architecture interview, and a general tech interview. The post says an average process spans two to three weeks and that some candidates get an additional coding challenge or role-relevant task. Structurally this is close to a Big Tech loop. The general tech round gives more room to your actual project experience.

Databricks lists a hiring manager phone screen, a technical phone screen, virtual panel interviews, reference checks and a hiring committee, while noting that the process varies from role to role. A committee stage is a pattern you may recognize from some FAANG processes.

Snowflake describes four stages on its Berlin page: an initial screen of about 30 minutes, technical interviews covering coding and/or system design, three to five panel interviews of 60 minutes each, and a decision. The page says the process can take two to four weeks and that you may be asked to attend at least one interview in person.

GetYourGuide explains how it hires: application review, a recruiter call, a take-home assignment, a technical interview, a meeting with an engineering manager and future colleagues, then the offer. The page notes that the process may vary by role. A take-home task tests different skills than a timed algorithm puzzle, so plan time for it explicitly.

For Celonis and SAP, we did not find a published process on the pages we reviewed. Ask the recruiter which rounds apply to your role and level. That question is normal and helps you split preparation time sensibly. Our guide to the hiring process in Germany for international developers explains the cultural side of these conversations.

Which employer type fits your experience?🔗

Backend developer🔗

Look at Zalando’s backend teams, SAP’s cloud-native roles and Celonis Engineering first. If you have database or performance depth, add Snowflake and Databricks. Lead your CV with the systems you owned: an API under load, a migration, an incident you resolved and what changed afterwards.

Data engineer🔗

Data platforms are the obvious match, but read carefully. Building pipelines on top of a platform is different from building the platform itself. Snowflake and Databricks build the platform, while Zalando lists data engineering roles inside product areas. Pick the side that matches your evidence.

Frontend developer🔗

Consumer marketplaces give frontend engineers the most visible product work, so Zalando and GetYourGuide are natural starting points. Enterprise software companies also need strong frontend engineers for complex interfaces. Show performance work, design-system contributions or accessibility improvements you can explain in detail.

ML engineer🔗

Databricks, Zalando’s machine learning roles and GetYourGuide’s AI Platform team are the most relevant of the six. Be precise about your role. Training models, serving them in production and building ML infrastructure are different profiles, and listings usually make clear which one they want.

Whatever your profile, keep the shortlist small enough to tailor each application. Our guide to finding tech jobs in Germany explains why a focused list of companies usually works better than mass applications. You can track the roles you compare in CodingCareer’s free COMMIT tracker.

When is FAANG the right target, and when is it not?🔗

FAANG is the right target when a specific team matches your background, you are ready for an algorithm-heavy loop with long preparation, and the location works for you. If Google is on your list, our guide to Google software engineer jobs in Germany shows which roles and interview stages to expect. Large companies also offer internal mobility, which matters if you want to change domains later without changing employers.

FAANG is the wrong single target when there are only a few relevant openings in your city, when your strongest experience is in a specialized domain that another company builds its whole business around, or when you need a job within a fixed timeframe. In those cases, a mixed list protects you. You can still apply to FAANG roles in parallel and use the preparation for both.

Do FAANG alternatives in Germany pay like FAANG?🔗

We deliberately do not rank these employers by pay, because published figures change quickly and depend on level and equity. Compensation is still a common reason people fixate on FAANG. Compare the actual structure of each offer with our FAANG salary guide and the broader developer salary guide for Germany.

Are FAANG alternatives the easy option?🔗

It is tempting to think of FAANG alternatives as a backup tier. That framing hurts your applications. Several of these companies publish processes with coding, system design, panels or take-home work, and a hiring team will notice when a candidate treats them as second choice.

Vacancies also change constantly. Some listings we found while researching this article were already closed, and others were months old. Some employers that are often named as alternatives are harder to assess from Germany than their reputation suggests. DeepL, for example, states that it was founded in Cologne in 2017, but on 26 October 2026 its official job board showed few engineering roles with a German location, so we left it out of the comparison. Check its board yourself if language AI is your field.

Visa and relocation support varies by company, role and time, and none of the pages we reviewed promised sponsorship for every vacancy. If you need a work permit, read our Blue Card guide, check the official requirements for your situation and ask each recruiter what applies to the specific role.

How do you build a wider target list with intent?🔗

A good alternative list is not a longer list of logos. It is a set of roles where your experience clearly fits, across employer types, so that one closed vacancy does not stall your search.

CodingCareer offers interview coaching by developers and application support focused on the German tech market, from shortlisting roles to CV evidence and mock interviews. Coaching is currently booked out through the end of 2026, and we keep a waiting list for 2027. In the meantime, you can organize your target roles in COMMIT, or email us to join the 2027 waiting list with your background and target companies.

FAQ

What are good alternatives to FAANG for software engineers in Germany?

The closest equivalents are product companies with sizeable engineering teams in Germany. Examples include Snowflake and Databricks in Berlin for data platforms, Celonis in Munich and SAP in Walldorf for enterprise software, and Zalando and GetYourGuide in Berlin for consumer marketplaces. The right choice depends on which engineering domain matches your experience, so compare individual roles and teams rather than company names.

Are FAANG alternatives easier to get into than Google or Amazon?

No employer on this list should be treated as an easy option. Several publish multi-stage processes with coding, system design, take-home tasks or panel interviews. What changes is the fit: a data engineer with query-engine experience may be a stronger match for a database company than for a generalist Big Tech loop. Target the roles where your evidence is strongest, not the ones you assume are less competitive.

Do non-FAANG tech companies in Germany require German?

It depends on the role, not the company. Many engineering listings at international companies in Germany are written in English, but a Senior Developer role at SAP in Walldorf that we reviewed required fluent German and English. Read the language requirement in each listing, and ask the recruiter directly if the description leaves it unclear.

Do these companies sponsor visas for international developers?

Visa and relocation support varies by company, role and time, and the employers reviewed here do not publish one rule that applies to every vacancy. Ask the recruiter what support applies to the specific requisition, and check the official EU Blue Card requirements for your own situation before you invest weeks in interview preparation.

Do FAANG alternatives in Germany pay less than FAANG?

There is no reliable general answer. Compensation depends on company, level, location and the equity component, and published ranges change frequently. Instead of relying on a ranking, compare the structure of each actual offer: base salary, bonus, equity and its vesting schedule. CodingCareer's FAANG salary guide for Germany explains which components to compare and which questions to ask.
