Tech Companies in Berlin for Software Engineers (2026)

Tech companies in Berlin hiring software engineers in 2026: Amazon, Zalando, Trade Republic, Databricks and more, with stacks, language and visa checks.

The tech companies in Berlin worth a software engineer’s shortlist include Amazon and AWS, Zalando, Trade Republic, GetYourGuide, SoundCloud, Contentful and Databricks. All of them showed Berlin software engineering roles on their official career pages on 26 October 2026. Snowflake runs a Berlin engineering hub, and Delivery Hero is headquartered in the city. Choose by the systems you want to build, not by the logo.

Key takeaways

  • Berlin’s employer mix is broad: e-commerce, fintech, travel, streaming, SaaS, cloud services and data platforms.
  • Amazon is the clearest Big Tech engineering employer in Berlin, with most software roles under its AWS development entity.
  • Most reviewed ads were in English, but ask about the team language before you assume German is irrelevant.
  • Visa or relocation support is set per role. Ask the recruiter and write the answer down.
  • Shortlist 10 companies by stack match and a project you can defend, then tailor your CV to each role.

Berlin is a good city to search for software engineer jobs because the range of products is wide. That breadth also creates a problem. A list of 200 “top startups” tells you nothing about whether a team writes Kotlin services, Go streaming backends or TypeScript SDKs.

This guide compares a selected set of Berlin employers by the engineering work their own job ads describe. It covers the stacks they publicly name, what the ads say about language, how to read Berlin job titles and how to turn all of this into a 10-company shortlist. For the national picture of Big Tech offices, start with our FAANG in Germany guide.

How big is the Berlin tech scene for developers?🔗

The Berlin Business Location Center, the city’s official business portal, counts about 12,600 companies and more than 145,000 employees in Berlin’s digital economy. The figures are for 2024 and come from Investitionsbank Berlin’s report “Berlin aktuell: Digitalwirtschaft” (2026). They cover the whole digital economy, so they include agencies, IT services and sales roles as well as product engineering.

The composition matters more than the totals. Berlin’s engineering market is shaped by companies that were founded or headquartered here and grew into large product organizations. Zalando’s Where we work page says its Berlin headquarters operates campus style with around 7,000 employees across multiple buildings. Delivery Hero states on its careers site that it is headquartered in Berlin. Trade Republic’s company page lists a Berlin address.

US tech companies are present too, but the evidence varies. Amazon’s job search shows many Berlin software roles. Google’s locations page lists a Berlin office, but we could not confirm open Berlin software engineering listings from its job search on the review date. For Microsoft, we found no official Berlin software engineering listing. Neither company is in the table below. That does not mean such roles never exist, so check their official searches yourself if those companies are on your list. Our Google software engineer guide explains how Google’s location fields work in Germany.

What do Berlin engineering teams actually work on?🔗

Big Tech in Berlin: Amazon and AWS🔗

Amazon is the clearest Big Tech engineering employer in Berlin. Its job search filtered to Berlin and software development showed, on 26 October 2026, SDE roles for AWS Config and AWS Billing, kernel and hypervisor work for EC2, big data processing for S3, a senior robotics software role at Amazon Robotics and embedded development internships. The AWS Config SDE II ad we saw describes a large configuration audit platform and asks for experience in at least one modern language such as Java, C++ or C#.

Read the legal entity on each ad. AWS service teams sit under Amazon Web Services Development Center Germany GmbH, while the robotics and graduate roles we saw appear under Amazon Development Center Germany GmbH. That tells you whether you would build cloud services or consumer and operations software.

For early-career applicants, a “Software Development Engineer - 2026” ad listed Berlin and Munich and asked for graduation between October 2025 and September 2026 or within the last 24 months. Search for the current graduate posting rather than relying on a saved link. If Amazon is a priority, prepare your behavioral stories early with our Amazon interview guide.

Scale-ups and product companies: Zalando, Trade Republic, GetYourGuide🔗

Zalando’s Berlin software engineering search showed roles across its ZEOS partner platform, payments, search, recommendations, machine learning and transport planning on the review date. One example, “Software Engineer (Kotlin) - Transport Planning Optimization”, names Kotlin for the backend and TypeScript with React for the frontend. It describes a Transport Management System that uses real-time data. That level of detail lets you map your projects directly to the ad.

Trade Republic’s applicant system showed Berlin roles for backend, Android, iOS and security engineers. Its “Backend Engineer (Berlin)” ad lists Kotlin, Spring, Vert.x, Hibernate or jOOQ on AWS, with Kubernetes and GitHub Actions for delivery. It asks for five years of software engineering experience, preferably in the JVM ecosystem. A separate Haskell backend role shows that the stack is not uniform across teams. Find both through the Trade Republic careers section.

GetYourGuide’s careers site describes its Berlin headquarters and says much of its tech team is still based in Zurich. Its engineering team page listed Berlin roles in the agentic platform, user platform, GraphQL API platform, supply and data engineering. The page does not publish a stack, so ask about it in your first call rather than guessing.

Product companies with a niche: SoundCloud and Contentful🔗

SoundCloud’s “Backend Engineer - Media Streaming” ad on its Greenhouse job board is unusually concrete. The team handles petabytes of data and gigabytes per second of traffic, asks for Go and Terraform, and includes an on-call rotation. If you have built high-traffic APIs, this is the kind of ad where you can map your projects line by line.

Contentful’s “Senior Software Engineer - Personalization” role in Berlin, listed on its job board, covers backend services, React frontends, developer-facing SDKs and CDN-based edge caching. Server-side TypeScript and API protocol design are core requirements. Developer tooling experience counts here more than at a typical consumer company.

Data and infrastructure: Databricks and Snowflake🔗

For Snowflake’s published hiring stages and a preparation plan, see our Snowflake Berlin engineering interview guide.

Databricks’ “Senior Software Engineer - Backend” ad for Berlin, found through its open positions page, describes services and client libraries for storing and accessing very large amounts of data on S3, GCS and Azure Blob Store. It asks for five or more years of production experience in Java, Scala, C++ or a similar language, plus knowledge of SQL. It also calls the hire a founding member of the Berlin site.

Databricks also hires customer-facing engineers such as Forward Deployed Engineers. Read the responsibilities before treating those roles as product engineering.

Snowflake’s Berlin careers page says the office opened in 2018 as its first European engineering hub with about 15 people. It also features a story about the Berlin engineering team fixing a bottleneck in a warehouse scheduling service. Watch Snowflake’s search if you work on databases or query engines. Both companies also appear in our FAANG alternatives in Germany guide.

Can you get a software engineer job in Berlin without German?🔗

Often, yes. Most ads in the table are written in English, and the ones we read did not ask for German. Contentful’s personalization ad, for example, asks for great communication skills in English and does not mention German. That is good news if you are moving to Berlin without German.

An English ad still does not prove that German is irrelevant. Some ads, such as Zalando’s transport planning role, only ask for “excellent communication skills” without naming a language. Customer-facing engineering, teams working with German partners and some internal tooling can involve German. Ask the recruiter in the first call: “What language does the team use in stand-ups, documentation and code reviews?”

German still pays off outside the team. It helps with landlords, the Bürgeramt and later career moves into large German companies that rarely post on English-language startup boards. If you want a broader view of how German hiring differs from the US or UK, read our guide to the hiring process in Germany for international developers.

How do you read a Berlin job ad: startup titles vs. Big Tech levels?🔗

Berlin scale-ups mostly use Software Engineer, Senior, Staff and Principal titles. Amazon uses internal levels, which appear in ads as SDE and SDE II. The same word can mean different scope. A Principal title at Zalando and a Principal at AWS are not automatically equivalent, and a Senior title at a 300-person company may cover what a mid-level engineer does elsewhere. If you are unsure how levels map across large companies, our FAANG companies list gives context on the Big Tech side.

Read three things instead of the title:

  • Experience asked for. Trade Republic’s backend ad and Databricks’ senior backend ad both ask for five years or more.
  • Scope of ownership. “Lead technical direction across teams” signals Staff or Principal scope. “Deliver features within the team” signals mid-level.
  • Operational duties. SoundCloud’s streaming ad includes an on-call rotation, and the AWS Config ad gives engineers ownership of monitoring and alerting. Both change the shape of your week.

Small samples hide a lot here. If you apply to ten senior roles and get no interviews, your interview quota of zero in ten may be a level mismatch rather than a CV problem. Track it before you change everything at once.

Salary bands are rarely published in Berlin ads. Use our developer salary guide for Germany to understand ranges by level and city, then ask for the actual band during the recruiter call.

Do Berlin tech companies support visas for non-EU developers?🔗

If you are a non-EU developer, the EU Blue Card is the usual residence route for a qualified tech job. Eligibility depends on your salary, qualification recognition and individual circumstances, so check the official BAMF guidance for your case.

At the employer level, support is set per role. Trade Republic’s Berlin backend ad states that relocation support is provided if required. It does not mention visas, so do not read it as a visa promise, and do not generalize it to other companies or other Trade Republic roles. Ask the recruiter what applies to your requisition and write the answer down. Our Blue Card guide for developers covers thresholds, timelines and how to raise the topic in an HR interview.

Berlin or Munich for software engineers?🔗

The two cities attract different kinds of engineering work. Based on the employers we reviewed for this guide and our Big Tech in Munich guide, the pattern looks like this:

Berlin Munich
Employer mix Berlin-founded scale-ups and product companies, plus Amazon/AWS and data infrastructure Big Tech engineering centers (Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft) plus Celonis
Typical domains E-commerce, fintech, travel, streaming, SaaS, cloud services Privacy and security products, silicon and firmware, enterprise software
Good fit if you Build backend, mobile or web products and want many companies to compare Target a specific Big Tech team or hardware-adjacent work

Based on employer sources reviewed for this guide (Berlin, 26 October 2026) and the Munich guide (20 October 2026). This is a selected sample, not a complete market survey.

Compare offers on the actual numbers for the actual role. City averages will not tell you how a specific Berlin offer compares with a specific Munich one.

How do you build a 10-company Berlin shortlist?🔗

Start from your evidence, not the employer list🔗

Pick the systems you can credibly talk about for 45 minutes. A Kotlin backend developer has an obvious match with Zalando and Trade Republic ads. A Go engineer with streaming or high-traffic experience should read SoundCloud’s ad closely. If you have worked on storage, databases or query engines, look at Databricks and Snowflake. TypeScript platform and SDK work points toward Contentful.

Then add companies beyond this table. Berlin has many more product companies than any single guide can cover. Our guide to finding tech jobs in Germany explains which job boards to use and why targeting 20 to 30 companies beats blasting 200 applications through job boards.

Use this worksheet for each company🔗

Copy the table into a spreadsheet or into COMMIT, CodingCareer’s free application tracker, and fill one row per company before you tailor your CV.

# Company and role link Date checked Team and product Stack match (yes / partial / no) Language stated Visa or relocation answer My strongest matching project Next action and date
1
2
3
…
10

Keep the "Date checked" column honest. A role that was open three weeks ago may be gone today.

A row with “no” in the stack column and nothing in the project column is a signal to drop the company or replace it. Ten rows you can defend are worth more than thirty you cannot.

Tailor the CV to the row, not the company🔗

Once the worksheet is filled, rewrite the top third of your CV for the role’s main system. If the ad names Kotlin and AWS, your Kotlin and AWS work should be visible in the first lines of your most recent position, with a result you can substantiate. Our German tech CV guide covers the structure German recruiters expect, including photo norms.

Measure where applications stop. If few applications lead to first interviews, revisit targeting and CV evidence. If you reach interviews but drop out in the technical round, shift your preparation there.

What should you do next?🔗

Berlin rewards focus. The city has enough engineering employers that you can choose by the work, not by whoever happens to be hiring this week. Start with the systems you know, verify each role on the employer’s own site, and keep a worksheet that tells you where your search is working.

CodingCareer offers interview coaching by developers and end-to-end job search support for the German tech market, from CV review to mock technical interviews and salary negotiation. Coaching is currently booked out through the end of 2026, with a waiting list for 2027.

FAQ

Which tech companies in Berlin hire software engineers?

On 26 October 2026, official career pages showed Berlin software engineering roles at Amazon and AWS, Zalando, Trade Republic, GetYourGuide, SoundCloud, Contentful and Databricks. Snowflake describes Berlin as its first European engineering hub. Delivery Hero is headquartered in Berlin, but its Berlin listings on that date were in security, data science and product roles. Openings change weekly, so confirm the location on each job ad.

Can I get a software engineer job in Berlin without speaking German?

Often, yes. Most Berlin engineering ads reviewed for this guide were written in English, and Contentful's personalization role named English communication skills without mentioning German. An English ad still does not prove that German is irrelevant, especially for customer-facing roles or teams working with German partners. Ask the recruiter about the team language early, and treat German as a plus for daily life and later career moves.

Is Berlin or Munich better for software engineers?

It depends on the work you want. Berlin has a dense mix of product companies and scale-ups in e-commerce, fintech, travel, streaming and data infrastructure, plus large AWS teams. Munich has stronger Big Tech engineering centers and more hardware-adjacent work. Compare the specific teams that match your background, then judge compensation and cost of living for the actual offer rather than city averages.

How should I read job titles at Berlin startups compared to Big Tech?

Berlin scale-ups often use titles like Senior, Staff or Principal Engineer without a public level framework, while Amazon uses internal levels that appear in ads as SDE and SDE II. A Senior title at a 300-person company and a senior level at a large tech company can mean different scope. Compare the responsibilities, years of experience asked for and ownership described, not the title alone.

Do Berlin tech companies sponsor visas for non-EU developers?

Some offer support, but it is decided per role. Trade Republic's Berlin backend ad, for example, states that relocation support is provided if required; it does not mention visas. Ask the recruiter directly what applies to your requisition. For the residence permit itself, the EU Blue Card is the usual route for developers, and eligibility depends on salary, qualification and individual circumstances.
